Magento is an open-source e-commerce platform written in PHP. Originally developed by Varien, Inc with assistance from a large development community of volunteers, the software was released as version 1.0 on March 31st of 2008. Form Varien CEO Roy Rubin subsequently sold a substantial share of the company to eBay, which acquired it in full eventually and later spun off the company as a separate entity again. Finally in November of 2015 Magento 2.0 was released.
It has earned a solid reputation as a business tool that enhances the user experience with features that are infinitely scalable and very flexible. Often used to create shopping carts and other dynamic content, Magento relies on MySQL or a MariaDB relational database management system, and the PHP programming language.
